  17. <p>     A SHILLELAGH FOR HER THOUGHTS. Margaret Thatcher, an early
  18. and ardent supporter of Gorbachev's, continued to lead cheers
  19. during her visit to the Kremlin last week, and even urged top
  20. military leaders there to back Gorbachev to the hilt. But
  21. behind her public exhortations lie deep doubts about his
  22. chances. She sees the emergence of Boris Yeltsin as a
  23. particular reason for pessimism; she regards him as an unguided
  24. missile, and has privately characterized him in a phrase that
  25. could raise hackles both in the U.S.S.R. and closer to home.
  26. "He is like an Irishman," she says.
